Reprocesare is approaching the humanitarian crisis of
the Roma in Pata Rat in relation to the city of Cluj Napoca. Rather than
providing short term improvements legitimizing Pata Rat as a place for Roma, it
is searching for a sustainable solution by reintegrating the community to Cluj.
It is reclaiming the right of the Roma to
live, play, work and being represented in the city by introducing a network of
architectural artefacts, starting from Pata Rat and growing incrementally. It
takes on the connotation of the Roma as part of the city's waste management,
embracing their role as environmental safeguards and shifting it from the
collection of waste to the reproduction of goods and spaces. The continuous
production of spaces is further initiating a transition of spatial, societal
and visual perceptions, constituting the framework for reintroducing the
community of Pata Rat to Cluj.
To finally set the framework for an
integration process without assimilation, the project is shifting visual
perceptions of the Roma in the city expressing and representing Romani cultural
heritage by developing a formal kanon from the extraction of design elements
and concepts of the gypsy palaces, manifesting their new role within the city.
